The basics
- 4D — known locally as «empat ekor», four tails — is a four-digit game. You pick a number from 0000 to 9999 and the draw pulls 23 winning numbers out of that same range.
- Because everyone plays the same 0000–9999 range, several people can hold the same winning number. Prizes are paid per stake, so a popular number is not worth less to you than an unpopular one at the same bet size.
- Big and Small are the two standard bet types. Small pays only if your number is 1st, 2nd or 3rd Prize, and pays more when it hits. Big pays on any of the 23 positions, and pays less on each.
- Permutation bets — box or roll bets, depending on the operator — cover every rearrangement of your digits for a proportionally larger stake.
- Jackpot variants ask for two numbers or a longer number and pay from a rolling pool instead of a fixed table.
- Licensed 4D in Malaysia is sold by number forecast operators under Ministry of Finance licences, at physical outlets, to non-Muslims aged 21 and over.
